I have enjoyed the research I have done on childrens books ( alot of it was simpliy sitting in a bookstore and reading kids book....people stare) I also enjoyed learning about the movie making process.

Final Propsal

My Final project will be a children's book describing the process of making a movie. I remember loving books when I was a kid the explained things, like the post office or airports. I wanted there to be a book about making movies. So many children think that movies just appear and have no clue about how much work goes into them. I want children to appreciate the movies they see and know that their are more to movies than just the celebrities.
The book will be a simple format with a sewn binding. I plan on covering the binding using Film strips and splicing tape. The book will be in Grey scale but very cartoony. I like very graphic images and I have heard that children resonp better with a grey scale stimulus than color. I love movies so much so I think this will be fun learning about the process and interprating it in a way that children can understand and appreciate. I am also using my knowlage from my Art Education courses to help make my artistic choices in the book. I have learned alot about how children learn and I hope to translate this in my book.

My Artist Book

My book is pretty simular to my prototype. I found it difficult to get the book to hang properly. I think that after this project I might use this as an actual purse. I love that it is made from Pride and Prejudice. I just feel like I am so close to the book.

I Like the idea of making books with pages that are not bound. I like being able to leaf through pages, so that it isn't only in one way.

I added a wax seal with my initial because I feel that it matches the old world charm of the book. It also marks the book as mine.

Prototype

My idea for an artist book is to create a purse that has pages that are the things that I keep in my purse. I carry so much stuff with me I am fascinated by why. I will draw different things that are in my purse in an old fashion etching format.

The purse will be made from the cover of a book. I chose my favorite book pride and prejudice because it holds so many memories and now it holds all my things!

Evocative Object

My Evocative object is my copy of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. I have read this book so many times I have lost count. I received this copy on my first trip to England from a new friend I met there. I felt so close to Jane Austen's world as I read through it in England. I would glance out a train window and wondered if Jane had see the same shore line or field.
I love the story of Pride & prejudice. Elizabeth Bennett is my favorite literary heroine. She is strong and brave but knows when she cannot fight true love. I feel connected to these characters every time I read it and can feel their pain and excitement as if I were there.

This is my favorite edition of this book and it holds many memories for me.

The Hangover: Duration

Duration is what makes up the timing of a movie. It can be simply how long the movie runs or how long the main story runs. It also can be how much time the movie covers. Like in the movie The Hangover the story takes place over 3 days. But the move is just about 100 minutes long. The director uses various devices to show time passing, such as light changes and fade in and outs.
I think that a particular scene show duration in The Hangover. It takes place when the main characters are waiting for a tiger to take drugs and fall asleep. During this time Stu sings a song about the tiger and about the situation they are in. It shows flash backs to the beginning of the film and gives a possible ending to the film. This shows how the film has progressed so far.
Duration in very important in this film because the film is so focused in. It takes place in just 3 days as apposed to other films that can takes place over decades. The director has to be very careful that the film doesn't speed by or drag on. There is no reason to show the characters waiting for something but you can't leave out pivotal scenes that help tell the story.

Another great example of using duration as a plot device is the Television program 24. The entire show takes place over 24 hours. The show must be carefully constructed to show what is important. You cant really have two important things happening at the exact same time.
